One Year Later on design | stage…
Twelve months ago, design | stage existed only as an ambition. We had no venue, funding, team, or defined narrative. Today, it has grown into a multi-site exhibition, a celebration of collaboration across the performance design industry, and an opportunity to mark 50 years of SBTD.
An extraordinary team has made this achievement possible. Xristina Penna has developed the Making Unmaking Remaking programme of events; Andrea Carr is shaping a visionary exhibition design; Stella-Jane Odoemelam is leading work across the VR and film projects; Emma Tompkins is creating an engaging educational and exhibition tour offer; and Fiona Watt and Terry Brown are working alongside an inspiring group to deliver the SBTD@50 celebrations. An incredible network of leads, volunteers, specialists, and committed SBTD members supports their efforts, and there are so many to list here.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the project has been seeing the work our Exhibiting Designers have submitted. From established practitioners to emerging voices, the breadth and creativity on display highlights the strength and diversity of contemporary performance design.
Alongside the exhibition, Marc Jennings is developing the visual identity and publication. We are delighted that every designer will receive at least a full page, ensuring their work has the space and visibility it deserves.
We extend our sincere thanks to SBTD, ALPD and ASDP members; partner organisations like Coventry University, Belgrade Theatre, Blue-i Theatre Technology, Natural Life Stories and Ecostage; students; volunteers; and supporters. Your generosity, expertise, and encouragement have transformed an idea into a national celebration of design.
One year on… we should be proud of what we are achieving together. As we move toward the final stages of delivery, we look forward to sharing inspiring exhibitions, events, conversations, and celebrations as we showcase the creativity of our performance design community and celebrate 50 years of SBTD.
