Join the SBTD
Membership is open to you at every stage of your career. We are also very keen to encourage practitioners from associated fields of work to join us.
With effect from July 2017 we are delighted to be able to offer Public Liability Insurance cover as an inclusive part of our Professional and New Professional Membership offer.
Professional Plus: £125 (including Public, Product Liability cover, Employers’ Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance)
As a Professional Plus member you will receive:
- Your own dedicated entry on our Designers’ Register where you will be able to upload images of a production of professionally realised work, with a short description, including full production credits, a biography, contact details and a link to your own website;
- The opportunity to submit work for our national exhibitions and the accompanying catalogue;
- Access to an international network of professional around the world via OISTAT (International Association of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians) via events such as World Stage Design and regular commission meetings and seminars;
- Regular e-updates via our SBTD News mail out.
Once we have processed your application, we will send out individual confirmation of your Public Liability, Employers’ Liability and Professional Indemnity cover, and a summary of Members Liability Policy/s.
You will also be able to access the Members only area of the website.
This will take up to 14 days. If you need the proof of your cover sooner, please contact us directly admin@theatredesign.org.uk.
Professional: £78 (including Public and Product Liability cover)

New Professional: £48
(Available for up to 3 years after graduation and including Public and Product Liability cover)
We recognise that the transition from education into professional practice can be a challenging one both socially and economically.
Our New Professional membership rate has been created to reflect this and is available to you up to 3 years after graduating.
We are particularly keen to develop our events programme around your needs by offering regular advice surgeries and opportunities to meet socially. If you have an idea for an event of your own, we are equally keen to help you develop that.
As a New Professional member you will receive:
- Your own dedicated entry on our Designers’ register
- where you will be able to upload images of a production of professionally realised work, short a description of the production including full production credits, a biography, contact details and a link to your own website;
- The opportunity to submit work for our national exhibitions and the accompanying catalogue;
- Access to an international network of professional around the world via OISTAT ( International Association of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians) via evenst such as World Stage Design and regular commission meetings and seminars;
- Regular e-updates via our SBTD News mail out.

Graduate Membership: £20
(Available for 1 year after graduating. Does not include insurance cover)
Become a SBTD member for your first year after graduating for just £20! Get all the discounts and offers a full member gets, just without the insurance cover.
You will get to:
- Create an entry on the Assistant Designers Register
- Receive the monthly News Letter
- Access Member bursary places on SBTD events and training
- Member discounts on SBTD publications
- Become part of our community of theatre designers!
If you need Theatre Designer specific Public Liability insurance you can always upgrade to our New Professional Membership Level (available for 3 years after graduating).
Student: Free!
(Available to anyone on a Performance Design related higher education course)
- Receive the monthly SBTD News Letter, detailing up and coming events including activities planned by our Working Groups and Regional Hearts
- Access to advise and support from theatre design professionals
- You will also be able to access the Members only area of the website.
- Discount on SBTD publications.
- Become part of our community of theatre designers!
(As a Student you will not be bale to create an entry in the Designers Gallery or the Assistant Designers Register).
UK Associate: £25
Design for performance is a very collaborative art form and without our collaborators our work can not exist.
We welcome associates from every area of contemporary performance practice and are very keen to support you in developing your working relationship with design and designers.
As an associate member you will receive:
- Access to an international network of professional around the world via OISTAT ( International Association of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians) via events such as World Stage Design and regular commission meetings and seminars;
- Regular e-updates via our SBTD News mail out.
- Access to the members area of the website.
International Associate: £35
Through international events such as World Stage Design, the Prague Quadrennial and the associated events and symposia that surround them, we are delighted to encounter colleagues from around the world whose work informs and inspires us.
If you would like to keep in touch with what we do or have studied/worked at the UK at some point but now live and work elsewhere in the world, we would be delighted to welcome you as an International Associate.
As an international associate member you will receive:
- Regular e-updates via our SBTD News mail out;
- Access to the members area of the website.
Retired: £25
Do designers ever really retire? We hope not.
If you have chosen to do less active designing or teaching, we still value your contribution to the Society immensely. It is entirely up to you how much you choose to become actively involved.
By joining us you can keep in touch with contemporary practice, attend events, volunteer to join the committee and offer advice and support to younger members.
As a retired member you will receive:
- Your own dedicated entry on our Designers’ register profiling up to 30 images of your realised work, your biog, contact details and a link to your own website if you wish;
- Access to an international network of professional around the world via OISTAT (International Association of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians) via events such as World Stage Design and regular commission meetings and seminars;
- Regular e-updates via our SBTD News mail out.
- Access to the members area of the website.
Affiliate Membership
Our new affliate membership will enable us to forge new links with those companies, venues, workshops and establishments that support, promote and enable theatrical productions to happen.
Membership fee is a minimum of £100/year.
If you are able to pay more this will go towards developing designers’ craft, helping us deliver more discounted or free training, talks and seminars, give guidance on terms and conditions for Theatre Designers and generally promote the area of Theatre Designer.
As an Affiliate Member you will get:
- Your logo and a section about you in a directory on our website;
- A link to your homepage at the bottom of our monthly newsletter;
- Information about your designer specific events and news can be shared on our social media and monthly newsletter;
- Inclusion in our promotional materials at exhibitions and Trade shows
- A discount on our published Catalogues;
- The knowledge that you are supporting designers as they forge their paths thru threat studies and into the professional world, and that you will be in their minds when they come to choose resources, venues and to exchange knowledge;
- Opportunities to present your company’s work and products direct to SBTD members in curated on-line and in-person
