June 06 to 16, 2019
Výstaviště Praha (Prague Exhibition Grounds)
The Society of British Theatre Designers co-ordinates the UK exhibits for the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space. Each country contributing to PQ endeavors to take a professional exhibit and a student/early career exhibit. For PQ2019, we created Staging Places Studio. Twelve designers were selected from our open call submissions by an industry panel to represent the diversity of work being made throughout the UK.
Throughout the festival, Staging Places Studio was animated by debates, provocations and talks with a range of national and international practitioners and wi operated in dialogue with The Future Utopias Imaginarium the exhibit created by our early career and student curatorial team.

The Future Utopias Imaginarium
A kinetic, experimental laboratory space, populated and facilitated by a dynamic student and early career curatorial team, directly linked to the Staging Places studio. The audience is invited to observe and interact with a team of ‘’Future Makers’’ in a circular space that sits between a factory and a gameshow. An endlessly recurring process to build a future utopia is activated by chance and imagination, and overseen by a mysterious authority figure.
The Future Utopias Imaginarium process began in a collaborative workshop with a group of over thirty student and early-career designers and performance makers who were then invited to apply for bursaries to become members of the curatorial team for PQ2019. Over the last five months a core team of nine practitioners of various backgrounds from Edinburgh, Liverpool, Bournemouth, Birmingham and London have constructed a shifting performance space for the Quadrennial.
