Biography

Graduate

Deborah Piffer is a Designer for Theatre and Performance based in London, graduated from Theatre Design at UAL Wimbledon College of Arts in 2023.

She has been always interested in sustainability, learning to see it as an opportunity to research about new materials, to use recycled resources and to be aware of the afterlife of her work. Another important element in her design process is the relationship between performers and space, explored through materials, colours, textures and emotions by introducing the set since early stages of rehearsal.

Deborah has collaborated as a set and costume designer in: Devised play ‘Tomorrow Night, A, Live?’ – Directed by Steven Kavuma, staged at the Lyric Hammersmith Studio Theatre in 2022.| Design proposal for ‘Tongues’ unpublished play by Dylan Coburn Gray – Directed by Eleanor Felton.| Devised dance piece ‘Smultronställe’ – Choreographed by Jiwon Oh, staged at The Place Theatre in 2023.

Act ii scene iv – in the dark room,

‘When a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it, does it still make a sound?’

It sounded to me like a lost rhythm in an orchestra – It informed the material research for the flooring. The barren texture on the back, the intense colour and delicate transparency of the orange peels reflect the emotional and environmental changes happening now.

The light will flood into the darkroom as ‘a series of choreographed movement (G.F. Milller)’.
