Richard Hudson was born in Zimbabwe and educated in Zimbabwe and England. He is Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and a Companion of the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and a Royal Designer for industry (RDI). In 1988 he won an Olivier Award for the Jonathan Miller season at the Old Vic. His set designs for The Lion King have won numerous awards including a Tony in 1998. In 2003 he won The Gold Medal for Set Design at the Prague Quadrennial and in 2005 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Surrey.
