Make/Believe : UK Design for Performance 2011–2015

The Society of British Theatre Designers new National Exhibition opened in the spectacular Newton Building Atrium at Nottingham Trent University in January 2015. From this open exhibition of the work of more than 150 performance designers based in the UK, a selection was made which was represented in a striking digital installation in collaboration with Backstage Academy at the prestigious Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space in June 2015 where it was awarded a Special Jury Prize.

Returning to the UK in July the exhibition was reconfigured once again as a three dimensional exhibit of models, costumes and drawings to take up a six month residency at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

We enjoy an excellent working relationship with the Theatre Collections Department at the V&A. This has facilitated popular and fruitful collaborations between industry, arts sector and education partners.

Our residencies at the V&A are seen by over 135,000 visitors.

The SBTD is a highly professional but charitable organisation and we rely on industry sponsorship and a series of grants alongside private donations and exhibition fees from our members, to produce our exhibitions and accompanying catalogues to the highest standards possible.

We are planning our next national exhibition in 2018/19. Please contact us if you are interested in partnering us
