SUBMITTING PICTURES AND BIOGRAPHIES
________________________________________

  1. Can I be included?
All members of the SBTD may submit a short biography and/or up to three pictures of their work for inclusion on this site. There is no charge for this service - however, you must be a member of the Society. (Membership details and application forms are available on the About the SBTD page.) Biographies may be changed, up-dated or removed every year.

  2. What kind of pictures can I submit?
When you send us your pictures they will be scanned and included in our standard format. Pictures may be in colour or black & white, and any size up to A4, - but we will reduce (or enlarge) it as necessary. (See item 7 below.) You may send pictures as photographic slides, or by email if you wish.
Note that 'landscape' proportions generally look better than 'portrait'. Compare the pages which you think work best, but bear in mind that your pages may look different when viewed with other browsers or on a different sized monitor.

  3. What details should I include with my pictures?
Details accompanying pictures on the Site usually include Title; Author; Company or Theatre; Director and Year of production - but you may omit any of these if you wish. Your own name will be included automatically as 'Designer', 'Costume designer' or 'Lighting designer' etc. You may also include a small amount of descriptive text, but your page will look better if you can keep this to about 100 words. You may include a picture+notes without a biography if you wish.

  4. What about my Biography?
Bear in mind that the Biography you submit here will be read on screen, which is rather more difficult than reading from the printed page, so you are strongly recommended to keep it clear and succint. Biographical details should be kept to about 200 words, and will be displayed in our standard format. You may offer a biography without a picture if you wish.

  5. What about Copyright?
You automatically own the copyright of your designs (unless you have specifically assigned it to someone else.) However, you should remember that the SBTD cannot control how your pictures are used by anyone who down-loads them from our Website.
You are personally responsible for checking that the photographer is happy for the pictures displayed on the Internet, and the SBTD will assume that you have done this. (It is possible to include a credit for the photographer if this is necessary.)

  6. Can I include links?
Links to your own website or email address can be included if you wish - but please bear in mind that the SBTD cannot be responsible for increasing the amount of spam in your Inbox!

  7. What resolution will you use scan my pictures?
Pictures will usually be scanned at 75ppi (or 'dots' per inch) and then reduced (or expanded) until the longest side is 450 pixels long. The data will then be compressed by 75% and stored as a '.jpg' file. We aim to reduce the data to around 20K. This ensures that your pictures will down-load as quickly as possible and fit the space available. Every effort will be made to produce the best results we can within these parameters.

  8. Can I submit my pictures by email or on a CD?
Yes - however, bear in mind that we will probably still have to compress it into our standard format and .jpg is a "lossy" format, which means that the picture is slightly degraded each time it is saved, - rather like making a photocopy of a photocopy. Consequently, when we have worked on it and saved it again, it will inevitably be further degraded. This means that if you submit a picture in digital format, for best results let us have it in .bmp or .tif format, and leave all the compression to us.

  9. Can I change my pictures?
You may change or remove your pictures every year. If you prefer to keep the ones already being displayed, they can stay there as long as you are a member of the SBTD.

  10. What will happen to deleted pictures?
In the long term, we hope to build up a permanent archive of all designs displayed on our website. Please let us know if you do not want your digitized pictures to be archived.

  11. Does this mean I will have my own Internet address?
Not exactly - your pictures and/or biography will form part of the SBTD's site, but will have its own individual address (or 'URL') which you can give to anyone you would like to look at your work.
Your personal digital name will usually consist of the first 2 letters of your first name, followed by the first two letters of your surname.
These four letters are preceded by http:\\www.theatredesign.org.uk\desbio\ and followed by '.htm'.
Thus the URL of Edward Gordon Craig's pictures and biographical details would be
    http:\\www.theatredesign.org.uk\desbio\edcr.htm - if he were a member!

  12. How do I contact you?
Please do not hesitate to email the Webmaster with queries or suggestions - or to point out any errors. All you have to do is click this email link: cwinslow@ualberta.ca
