COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
BA (Hons) Theatre Design
Validated by the University of Glamorgan
Three years, full time.

The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama offers professional training in specialist areas of set and costume design and realisation, equipping students with the relevant knowledge and skills-set to maximise their employment potential within the theatre, film, television and related performance-design industries.

In the truly theatrical setting of a music and drama college, design students at RWCMD contribute to the College's full programme of public performance including mainstream and alternative theatre, opera and musical theatre. The College houses a main theatre and two studio theatres, and regularly stages productions at professional external venues, providing valuable opportunities for students to work in a variety of performance spaces.

The Theatre Design Department also mounts a major site-specific production each summer involving puppetry in performance.

In addition to performance-centred work, a series of conceptual projects provide students with the opportunity to explore their creative identity unhindered by practical limitations.

Graduating students exhibit their work at showcases in Cardiff and London during their final term.

All College productions and projects are supervised by designers and design practitioners from within the industry, and students also benefit from the experience of working alongside professional theatrical directors, reflecting the practices and conditions of the professional environment.

The department enjoys excellent rates of graduate employment, recent graduates having undertaken work with companies as diverse as Aardman Animation, Bristol Old Vic, Salisbury Playhouse, Northampton Theatre Royal, Disney Corporation, No Fit State Circus, HTV, BBC, S4C, Vienna Opera House, the Royal Ballet and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
