Course Description:
The course aims to introduce, analyse and challenge the professional role of what has traditionally been known as a 'Theatre Designer'. As the course progresses, it encourages an increasingly individual and independent approach. The traditional skills of stage design form a sound base, however, students are encouraged to explore the notion of design for performance in its broadest sense. Whilst some of our graduates go on to become theatre designers, others go on to work in a variety of related areas; theatre crafts, TV/film production design, event design, devised performance, live art and so on. We aim to produce a diverse, independent body of students prepared for the challenges of an ever changing, ever widening field of practice.
Recent external collaborating bodies have included Rambert School and The Royal Ballet School (as part of the famous Design for Dance project), The Place Theatre, The Young Vic, Birkbeck College, The Philip Lawrence Awards, The London International Film School and Chicken Shed Community Theatre Company. In 1999 graduating student Miriam Buether was overall winner of the prestigious Linbury Prize for Stage Design, and in 2000, graduating students Will Kempton and Asnna Hymas were both awarded work experience in television as winners of BBC's Vision awards.
