Course Descriptions:
The Performance Design Route of the BA (Hons) Degree in Performing Arts aims to produce creative, ambitious and multi-skilled designers who are equally at home designing sets and costumes for a conventional play in a theatre; creating the visual environment for a new dance work in a studio, developing the visual concept for a fashion show in a warehouse or creating a site-specific art/performance event. Throughout the course there is an emphasis on actual performance and presentation. As an integral part of LIPA'S unique multi-disciplinary performing arts degree programme, The Performance Design Route places great importance on collaborative work. The Performance Design students have a number of opportunities to study and create work alongside students and professionals in acting, community arts, dance, music management and performance technology. Assessment is based on a combination of continuous appraisal of course work, practical projects, portfolio submissions, presentations and written work.
LIPA normally expects all applicants to have successfully completed a Foundation Studies course in Art and Design or an equivalent course. Exceptionally, students may be admitted who can demonstrate ability and/or experience equivalent to the qualifications required.
Theatre and Performance Technology is aimed at students who want to work in lighting, sound (for live performance), stage management, technical direction, production management or stage technology.
To encourage students to become multi-skilled in the many areas and applications of theatre and performance technology all students take modules in Lighting, Sound, Stage Technology, Stage Management and Production Management. There are also a range of specialist modules including Technical Event Design, Entertainments and Event Production and Professional Studies. Students on this course also provide technical and practical support for a wide range of LIPA student productions and performance projects. Assessment is continuous and is by a combination of formal written exams, written papers or seminar presentations and practical production work.
To apply for this programme students must be 18 years of age on 1st September in the year that they wish to commence their studies. Applicants are often educated to A-Level or equivalent standard but we do not specify a set number of points to be achieved. LIPA takes five factors into account when assessing applicants. These are: Experience to date, education, communication skills, interdisciplinary experience and entrepreneurial skills. Applicants need to complete a UCAS form and a LIPA application form.
