Course Descriptions:
The BA (Hons) Theatre Practice course offers a unique range of vocational study disciplines which allow students to specialise in a particular area of professional theatre practice. The course attracts students from a wide range of countries within Europe and beyond. Students wishing to work in the areas of Theatre Design, Puppetry, Theatre Crafts, Stage Management or Theatre Production are able to follow one of the individual study disciplines listed below:

A programme of vocational skills studies allows students to develop a high level of practical competence within their primary area of study, supported by a good understanding of the theatre-making process.
The course is firmly rooted in the practice of contemporary professional theatre and students are encouraged to look beyond the notional boundaries of their own disciplines and to recognise the way in which all the disciplines that contribute to the theatre-making process overlap and inform each other. Diverse forms of contemporary theatre practice are explored allowing students to discover a personal rationale as questioning, creative and adaptable practitioners. A new course option in Circus has recently been added to the BA programme.
The internationally recognised MA Advanced Theatre Practice course offers practical training opportunities for those who can demonstrate commitment to theatrical performance in its broadest sense. The course is committed to promoting innovative and experimental working methods that build upon the following study strands: Students are admitted to the course to follow one strand. However, the course emphasises the collaborative nature of theatre and, as the year progresses, students will work closely with those following other course strands. By working together, students have the opportunity to develop their chosen theatre discipline to a deeper level, and to gain an understanding of the disciplines and approaches of their colleagues. The course is not designed to train practitioners in any one style or approach. It is expected that the work will arise naturally from the creative aspirations of the individuals concerned.
Foundation Studies in Art and Design - This one-year, full-time course offers an introduction to a range of art and design disciplines. It is suitable for those intending to progress to a more specialised higher education training and follows traditional foundation models. To this end the curriculum contains strong elements of both the visual perception and the critical analysis that are found in most recognised Foundation courses. Some students will be attracted to this course by the School's outstanding provision in performance and production-related design. Those intending to apply for further study in this area will be offered a theatre studies option during the second term.
