INTRODUCTION

A career in performing arts is not an easy option. There are almost inevitable periods of unemployment for those in the spotlight and often a lack of job security for backstage staff.

However, if you are one hundred per cent certain of what you want to do and are prepared to pursue your dream with dogged determination, then success - and even stardom- may be yours for the asking.

There are several things you can do to smooth the path to work:

This listing features courses where theatre set, costume and lighting design (as well as some of the associated craft trades) are offered at a higher education level. Courses are listed under the following subject areas in order of level of achievement sought:

The Society does not endorse or recommend any particular course: The choice is for the individual to make. Closer examination will show how courses vary, giving a special perspective on the education on offer: Size of intake; level of personal tuition; the balance of hands-on practical, art-based and theoretical projects; collaborating on realised projects within a drama college or self-determining within an art college; location in Britain, proximity of live performance/theatre companies; vocational entry level or mature/world-experience entry; degree level of achievement, higher attainment or no qualification at all (as is the case with the excellent course at Motley), staff-student ratio.

There is something for everyone but you must delve deeper into the prospectus to discover what is on offer and whether it meets with your expectation. Contact details and website addresses are given in as much detail as practical.
