Biography
Michael first became involved in theatre whilst studying for an engineering degree. Work at the Glasgow Citizens and the Half Moon led to his interest in lighting.
His first designs were for York Theatre Royal, "Kiss of the Spiderwoman", "Romeo and Juliet", The Dukes Playhouse Lancaster "'Tis 'Pity She's a Whore", "Bring Down The Sun" and Promenade productions of "The Tempest", "Much Ado About Nothing", "The Wind in the Willows" and "The Tales of King Arthur".
Michael has lit many productions for Cheltenham Everyman including "The Mayor of Casterbridge", "The Pickwick Papers", "Amadeus", "Annie", "Death and the Maiden", "The Sound of Music", "Little Shop of Horrors" and two productions of "Macbeth". The designs for the 1992 production formed a part of the British Gold Medal winning entry to the 1995 Prague Quadrennial.
Other work includes: "Hamlet" (Kaos Theatre Company); "She Knows You Know" (West Yorkshire Playhouse); "Two Way Mirror", "Brother Eichmann" (Library Theatre, Manchester); "La Bohème" (ETO); "King Lear" (Cork Opera House); "My Cousin Rachel" (Derby Playhouse); "Last of the Red Hot Lovers", "Gaslight" (Bolton Octagon); "Second From Last in The Sackrace" (Harrogate Theatre); "Love off the Shelf" (Nuffield Theatre, Southampton); "Scary Antics", "Fallen Angels" (Shysters Theatre Company); "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (Coventry Belgrade); "The Libertine" (Central School of Speech and Drama); "Into The Woods" (Royal Northern College of Music); "Flavio" (Handel Society at The Royal College of Music) and "The Sound of a Hammer" (New Theatre Works).
Michael has also lit exhibitions for the Theatre Museum including "Let Paul Robson Sing" and exhibitions about Rambert and Theatre de Complicité.
