Biography

Marie-Jeanne Lecca was born in Bucharest where she studied at the Beaux Arts Institute. She now lives in London and works extensively in opera.
Her set and costume designs include: "Thérèse Raquin" (World Premiere, Dallas, San Diego and Montreal); "Carmen" (Houston, Seattle and Minnesota Opera); "Falstaff" , "The Stone Guest", "Pelleas and Melisande", (English National Opera); "Iolanthe" (Scottish Opera); "The Barber of Seville" (Glimmerglass Opera).

Among her recent costume designs are: "Die Frau ohne Schatten" and "Agrippina" (Opernhaus Zurich); "Krol Roger" (Bregenzer Festspiele, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona); "Carmen" (Bolshoi Opera); "Khovanschina" (Welsh National Opera); "Die Soldaten" (Ruhr Triennale, Lincoln Center Festival New York); "The Ring Cycle", "Wozzeck","The Greek Passion" (Royal Opera House, joint winner Olivier Award); "Julietta", "The Dwarf" and "Seven Deadly Sins" (Opera North, South Bank Show Award); "Turandot" (Salzburger Festspiele); "La Juive", "L'Etoile", "Peter Grimes", "Macbeth" (Opernhaus Zurich); "Rienzi" and "Jenufa" (Wiener Staatsoper); "Moses und Aron", "Katya Kabanova" and "Faust" (Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich); "The Turn of the Screw" (La Monnaie, Brussels); "Salammbô" (Opéra National de Paris); "The Nose" (De Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam); "Maskarade"and"West Side Story" (Bregenzer Festspiele); "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "I Pagliacci" (Staatsoper Unten den Linden, Berlin); "Pacific Overtures," "Nabucco", "Verdi's Requiem" and "Der Freischütz" (English National Opera); "The Adventures of Mr Broucek" (English National Opera and Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich).

She received The Martinu Medal for "Julietta" and "The Greek Passion"and was nominated by Opernwelt magazine as Costume Designer of the Year for "Maskarade".

Her theatre work includes sets and costumes for: "As You Like It" and "La Bête Humaine" (Nottingham Playhouse); costumes for "The Taming of the Shrew" (Royal Shakespeare Company) and "Napoleon" (London West End).

For Film and TV her credits as a costume designer are "Amahl and the night visitors" (BBC Wales, BAFTA nomination)

She was part of the British team that won the "Golden Triga"at the 2003 Prague Quadriennale .
