The set design was inspired by contemporary artists responding to the slave trade, as well as references to the period and extensive reading and research. I looked at the structure of slave ships and the theatres of the time and created theatrical wings echoing the ship's structure which were paint splattered with blood red and sprinkled with gold. The costume design was a combination of dress from the time of Richard III, the time the play was set, 1821, and modern African dress.
