Bread and Roses was a new play written by Ian Kershaw and directed by Amanda Huxtable about the 1912 strike of mill workers in Lawrence over pay and conditions. The backdrop is inspired by ‘The Hero of a Hundred Fights’ a painting by Turner of a statue being forged in a furnace. The cogs hanging overhead turned when the workers where working but stopped when they decided to strike.
