The Guardian Robin Thornber - September 1993 It is a searing portrayal of the ennui of the dislocated, anachronistic, futile and fearful officer class of late colonialism that was Duras's childhood in Indochina. If her cinematic theatrical technique is disturbingly novel in this country then this production, directed by Annie Castledine and Annabel Arden, hooks the audience with the vivid, other-worldliness of a nightmare. Iona McLeish's magnificent residence imposes its end stage by setting it into the auditorium, transporting the audience to a fly-on-the-wall role but presumably making it difficult for this ravishing, haunting production to be picked up and toured. The ephemerality of a three week run makes you weep for the prodigality of vision and skill: it is an event of international significance which lifts this theatre into world champion class. Anyone who has Mold within travelling distance should not miss it.
