Die Fledermaus takes a huge swipe at the corruption and hypocrisy of 19th Century Viennese society. To give it an edge we set it in the long hot summer just prior to the First World War. The simple stage on which all the characters act and play thrusts through a sinking tumbled down gilded proscenium arch which can be seen as the frame of a giant mirror suggesting the catastrophe yet to come with the fall of the Austria - Hungarian Empire.
