Robert graduated from Manchester University with a degree in drama in 1968. He now lectures at Hull University Drama Department, and is active as a freelance director and designer, most recently for a pantomime in a class B prison. He is a convenor of the Scenography Working Group of the International Federation for Theatre Research, and had given many papers on the aesthetics and politics of stage space.
