Kathrine Sandys

I am a scenographer and academic, currently Head of Theatre Practice at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, holding previous permanent posts in design and production schools at Rose Bruford College, Mountview, LIPA and GSA. I workpredominantly with light and sound in live performance, installation, museum display and site-specific events. My PhD in Music (Sonic Arts) explored the phenomenological scenographic properties of decommissioned Cold War military architecture and sublime encounters. This has continued in my practice with commissions and writing presented and published through reimagining military and industrial sites.

International dance and music collaborations have included artists from South Africa, India, Czech Republic, Japan, Ireland, Ghana, Harare International Festival of Artsand most recently the International Dance Collective (IcoDaCo). UK commissions have included Aldeburgh Music; Liverpool Theatres (Everyman, Playhouse, Unity);Imperial War Museum (London, North and Churchill War Rooms); Opera North; Liverpool International Biennial of Contemporary Art; Vintage at Goodwood; Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; FACT; East Midlands Cultural Olympiad 2012; Tate Liverpool.

I was recipient of the “International Award for Excellence in Sound Design” for Hush House, at the 2011 Prague Quadrennial

Advocacy and organisation of national and international platforms for British-based designers fosters discourse between the Society and the sector around the current international landscape and future of design. Through my role as an academic and practitioner, supporting emerging practitioners, I am able to bring a voice of the next generation of designer and the future of our field, to the SBTD committee.
