"Heredity" by Anthony Nielson
Directed by Anthony Nielson - Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, London/1995
SETTING AND COSTUMES DESIGNED BY NAOMI WILKINSON
Set in a Hospice, a family sits around the bed of a dying Grandmother. The wait for death is relentless. Interspersed with uncompromisingly naturalistic scenes suggesting repetition and
continuation are scenes of fantasy which seem to function as an emptying of the woman's soul.
The set comprised of three gauze screens with a doorway and clock diminishing in size, forming
a kind of passageway for the life to ebb away. The fantasies took place in the compartments created by these screens, which the gauze allowed to be gradually revealed.
