"I Weep at my Piano"
Devised and performed by 'Told by an Idiot' - Gulbenkian Studio Newcastle/1998
SETTING AND COSTUMES DESIGNED BY NAOMI WILKINSON
"I Weep at my Piano" was a devised piece celebrating the meeting of three of Spain's greatest artists, while students: Frederico Garcia Lorca, Salvador Dali and
Luis Bunuel in Madrid. The piece was framed as a flashback during the moment of Lorca's brutal execution at the hands of the Fascists during the Spanish Civil War.
I wanted to create a surreal landscape both playful and foreboding in which the hill of the execution haunts each scene. The room shared by the three artists floated
above this landscape, held in the air by stilts as a visual metaphor for the exuberance and creativity they experienced together. A treetrunk penetrating through the floor
and room alludes to Lorca's sexuality and charged friendship with Dali.
