SET AND COSTUMES DESIGNED BY MARTIN THOMAS

Scene 3 - The hotel room has just been blasted by mortars.

What better material to make this set from? Hessian, a material that when lit with hints of red turn lush and orange, giving the hotel room its charm, but when lit with hints of blue, brings out the army sandbag look in the hessian. In the blast the two five-meter walls to the left and right of the bed collapse leaving the one wall above the bed. This produced, with the bed raised on a platform, an altar look. Instead of burying the baby and Ian under the floor we buried them in the bed. The image was fantastic, Kate on the bed ripping the gut out of the mattress and burying a dead baby in this altar-styled bed.
