"Aladdin" by John Ginman
Midland Arts Centre, Birmingham - Director: John Ginman - 1999
Lighting design by Arnim Friess - Projections by Arnim Friess and Janet Vaughan
SET AND COSTUMES DESIGNED BY JANET VAUGHAN
The story (mostly) alternates between two locations - the city where Aladdin lives, and the desert which is the place where the magician casts his spells. I wanted to close the grey city in, and bring
it as far downstage as possible, which I did with the use of a large gauze curtain and slide projections. This made the transition to open, colourful desert seem almost like magic in itself.
