"Romeo and Juliet" - Sherman Theatre, Cardiff/1995
Lighting designer: Kevin Sleep
SET AND COSTUME DESIGN: CLAIRE LYTH
Civil war: Shakespeare's play is updated to 20th-century Spain. Spanish passion, temperament and formality are portrayed against a minimalist set of two cantilevered platforms.
The lovers are seen as small elements in an almost empty space dominated by a cold sun/moon. The area is divided diagonally into white for the Capulets and black for the Montagues.
The colours are echoed in the costumes, making any invasion of each other's space more emphatic. The scene only alters for the feast, when blood-red silks drop in and the actors fill
the space, dressed in flamboyant red, fiesta-inspired costumes.
