"Uncle Vanya" by Chekhov - Wilton's Music Hall, London/2007
Director: Hugh Fraser - Lighting: Nick Holderidge
SET AND COSTUMES DESIGNED BY CHARLIE CRIDLAN

The faded grandeur of Wilton's Music Hall provided the perfect setting for the production inspired by the film "Vanya on 42nd Street". I carefully chose junk furniture, objects and drapes that would suggest simultaneously a disused theatre and an antiquated Russian villa in no particular time or space, but with a timeless quality. We allowed the text to draw the audience into the play, the rickety staircases and barley-twist balconies of Wilton's added bundles of atmosphere.
